So what is home automation, anyway?  And how might one explain Control4’s approach to the concept of “whole home control” in two minutes—or even less. With the possibilities as endless as the sea, we thought we'd tackle the complexities of what “one remote” (or smartphone, tablet, etc.) can do with the most basic animation of all… and using just a few brand-specific colors. A National Treasure Past tumbling waterfalls and towering canyons tinted with mineral deposits. Through forests, deserts, valleys and tunnels, and across breathtaking bridges... The Chihuahua al Pacifico (“El Chepe” for short), Mexico’s Copper Canyon rail-road, is among the world’s most spectacular train journeys. One of only two passenger routes in the country, this 650 km (~404 mile) “ride in the sky” takes 13 hours to wind its way northeastward along the Sierra Tarahumara (part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range). The journey runs from Los Mochis on the northwest coast to Chihuahua in central northern Mexico, rising from sea level to almost 2,500 meters (~8,000 feet) at its highest point.

Many homeowners desire the simplification that home automation can bring to their lives but either worry about the potential cost associated with it or they simply just don’t know where to begin.   A common starting point for home automation revolves around A/V entertainment because it is not uncommon to walk into a family room or home theater and see a stack of remotes sitting on the coffee table. For most people it’s common to walk into a dark house after a long day at work, fumble with the keys, and attempt to turn on that darn light switch with arms full of groceries. Control4 makes this inconvenience  a thing of the past for one Sarasota, Florida homeowner with automated lighting. When the family walks in the door, lights automatically turn on and the television tunes to their favorite channel. When it is time to put the kids to bed, the “Bedtime” button turns off the lights in their rooms and starts a movie. This homeowner loves Control4 so much, this isn’t the first time he’s had  a Control4 system installed because it is so easy to operate.

Automation for Autism Project

Mark Buzzard, a Control4 dealer, has had his fair share of experience with home automation. But it wasn’t until a personal challenge presented itself that he quickly realized just what Control4 was truly capable of.   Mark’s three-and-a-half year old son, Brody, was born with autism as well as apraxia, a speech disorder that makes it difficult for him to articulate what he wants. Consistency in his schedule is vital to his routine and quick changes to that routine can trigger what the family calls “meltdowns.” To help alleviate these meltdowns, Mark created preprogrammed scenes to allow Brody’s day to start the same way each morning.
