Home Theater Kickstarts Automation Project Project
The owners of this 3,700-square-foot home in Westfield, New Jersey, had always dreamed of having a home theater. Not the traditional dark, dedicated space, but a more casual entertainment area that could function nicely as a place for the kids to play games or as a place for serious movie watching. And let’s not forget the Big Game. “Using the theater for a Super Bowl party was top on the owners’ list,” says custom electronics professional Ryan Herd from One Sound Choice, in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. To support the diverse entertainment experiences, Herd would outfit the room with all the necessities: a big projection screen and high-quality projector, 7.4 surround-sound system comprising of a suite of built-in speakers and subwoofers, several pairs of 3D glasses, and components including an Apple TV, a Blu-ray Disc player and a cable box for plenty of content options.

One major misconception in home automation is that, because you are bringing more electronic devices into your home, that it will quickly become a breeding ground for more boxes, wires and the like. But luckily, this is not the case. Home automation simplifies your life and allows you to tuck away those ugly devices – giving you functionality from one simple remote, touch screen, smart phone or tablet. Simply stated, it cuts the clutter. In some ways, I’m a bit of a control freak… at least when it comes to all the random crap that so easily accumulates around my home. I absolutely hate seeing wires.

Whole Home Automation—All in the Family Project
Homeowners Ryan and Mindy Sullivan took a kid-friendly approach to the automation of their 4,000- square-foot home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their plan went way beyond simply tucking processors, amplifiers and other sensitive and expensive gear inside locked closets away from curious and sticky hands, though. “We went crazy with the technology,” says Ryan. “We wanted a system that could be molded easily to the type of lifestyle we lead.” The Sullivan’s lifestyle could be described as busy, bustling and brimming with activity as Mom and Dad keep their energetic 8- and 4-year-olds in tow.

An Accessible Home: Joe Ribera on Automation and Accessible Design Blog
Whether due to injury, disability, or age, more and more homeowners today in need of assisted living are reaching out to home professionals for solutions that enable them to stay independent and in their home rather than having to move in with a family member or to a care facility. Because of this, accessible design is becoming a popular topic among interior designers, architects, builders and other home professionals as they look for ways to better marry together beauty and function in a home. Technology can offer remarkable independence and security without compromising the aesthetics of the space, which is why many accessibility-conscious designers now incorporate home automation into most of their designs.
HOME (AUTOMATION) FOR THE HOLIDAYS Blog
I don’t know about you, but for me and my family the holidays do not bring with them “silent nights.” Not even one. They bring extra house guests, all-day deliveries, and arguments over thermostat settings. I love it, but it can get overwhelming and honestly, I wouldn’t say I’m one of those “host-with-the-most” types of people. But I do enjoy having a space where guests feel comfortable and welcome—even if I’m not there to greet them, or help them with the remote, because there is nothing worse than being at someone else’s house and not being able to turn the TV or some tunes on! So if Santa can have his little helpers during the holiday season, I can have mine, and it’s my home automation system.
