Shanan Carney

My name is: Shanan C.
What I do: Use words, pictures, and video to communicate Control4 to the masses.
Why I do what I do: I get to meet great people and travel to amazing places.
If I didn’t do what I do, I’d do this instead: Learn how to design and sew clothes. Or how to speak Japanese. Or apprentice for the interior designer of Mandarin Oriental hotels.
What makes me tick: I drink my coffee with butter and MCT oil.
What makes me “talk”: Almost anything, unfortunately.
I geek out about: Biohacking health. And eye make-up.
I want the world to know: As human beings, we have the ability to choose to see what we all have in common—or what we don't. And while I practice the art of everyday kindness and compassion, I've by no means mastered it yet.

And if you're impressed by such a man cave, just wait until you see the fan cave we captured and documented near Chicago!

Total Home Control in Black & White—And Red.

July 25, 2014

So what is home automation, anyway? And how might one explain Control4’s approach to the concept of “whole home control” in two minutes—or even less. With the possibilities as endless as the sea, we thought we'd tackle the complexities of what “one remote” (or smartphone, tablet, etc.) can do with the most basic animation of all…

Seeing The Light

November 6, 2013

If I believed everything I'm told, I would have thought that most interior designers had an aversion to all things home automation... especially when it came to lighting control. Ever heard the expression "wall acne"? Luckily...

September 20, 2013

In this issue of Home Smart Home, we'll take you back 10 years—and one hundred years—with a view through the lens of home automation conveniences. We interviewed the three founders of Control4 to learn more about their advancements of a smart home from a decade ago, and while we're there, we asked for a read on the future, too. In other features...

Bahama Mama

August 14, 2013

With three kids, three dogs, and a successful property development company to manage, Nassau residents John and Ghandi Kane, had a one-word vision when it came to designing their 10,000 sq foot home – usability. “We tried to design every inch of it to reflect us as a family,” Ghandi, a seventh generation Bahamian, says. And that's where Control4 fits in...

Notting (King of the) Hill

March 5, 2013

I did a year of my undergraduate studies in London, England, and it was there where I fell in love ... with adventure. There was just something about the city's crazy twists of cobblestone streets and meandering mews that kept me in a constant mode of exp

February 21, 2013

Ah, decisions, decisions: Which voluptuous view to choose? The sprawling Thames River in London, England, or the riveting action flick on the wide-screen television, powered by a motor custom-designed to angle and tilt at your command in order to give you

Need a Little Summer This Winter?

December 11, 2012

As we're nearing Winter solstice, I am blown away that somehow the summer came to a close without me sharing the details of a very special visit I made to a girls' summer camp in Pennsylvania this past July. I must be jonesing for some sunshine.

Shades of Grey Control

October 22, 2012

My reference point both for "grey" and "control" come not from a best-selling novel from 2011 (one of these days I suppose I should read it?) but instead from a visit I made earlier this last year to none other than New York City.
